India wins shot put gold in Asian Grand Prix

New Delhi, June 24 (IANS) Shot putter Navpreet Singh won India's solitary gold at the third and final leg of the 2005 Asian Grand Prix series held at Songkla, Thailand, Friday.
Navpreet, who had picked up a gold and a silver in the first two legs of the series, won by clearing a distance of 18.77 metres. Ranvijay Singh stood third with an effort of 18.09 metres.
Anil Kumar lost his duel with Indonesian sprinter John Murray when he came second in the men's 100 metres with a timing of 10.41 seconds, according to an Athletics Federation of India release.
Murray, who won the first leg and lost in the second to the Indian, finished in 10.38 seconds. Piyush Kumar of India came third at 10.52 seconds.
Apart from Navpreet's gold, India also won five silver and five bronze medals for a tally of 11 medals.
Maha Singh failed to win the third leg after asserting his supremacy in the first two legs as he could only manage a jump of 7.52 metres in the men's long jump.
