Nasser Hussain fans were outraged when in May 2004, he was docked 3 runs off his last shot in test Cricket - a majestic four to win the Lord's test against New Zealand.
Hussainw as on 102 not out when he stroked the ball past extra cover and over the boundary rope, yet the official scorecard leaves him at 103.
The reason? Quite simple. The four never counted. Law 21.6 states that 'as soon as a result is reached, the match is at an end. nothing that happens thereafter will be regarded as part of the match.'
Why have a rule that states a match is finished... when its finished?! But that hussain drive would prove you wrong.
By the time the ball crossed the rope, Hussain ahd already run the single required to win and therefore the match was already over.
So why make a big fuss over it anyway? it was only three runs. But without this rigorous application of law 26.1, Hussain would have retired scoring a third consecutive four to win a Test match at Lords. A pretty unusual distiction
