Quote:
Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif have been recalled from Pakistan's Champions Trophy squad after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, a Pakistan Cricket Board official told AFP Monday. The fast bowlers were called back from India after coming up positive in an internal PCB test carried out ahead of the tournament, the board official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

This is big setback for pakistan because they lost thier opning bowlers and now pakistan's hope is over. Shoaib and Asif tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.

Yes I have also got the news. It's a very disappointing news for cricket fans. Shoaib is a great bowler, so many people go to see the match due to him. Asif is also an upcoming good bolwer. Pakistan team got a real setback.

This is due to a test conducted in Pakistan about 3 weeks earlier before coming to India. That result is out today. Pakistan team is coming to the news due to wrong reasons.

Very disappointing news. It's pretty stupid to take drugs period, but to take performance enhancing drugs is an act of cheating, really. Both players should have known better. I'm guessing we won't see them around for the next year or so - if Warney was banned for a year for a non-performance enhancing drug then I'm guessing if they are found to be guilty then they will be banned for two years. That might be the end of Chucktar's turbulent career.

That said, I'm sure they'll appeal and ask for their B samples to be tested. We'll see what the reasons are.

I'm surprised as to why they would be asked to provide another test sample. Generally in drug tests two samples are taken - an A and a B sample. If the A tests positive they test the B sample and see if that tests positive as well.

Apparently Rana Naveed has been sent home as well. I can't confirm this though.

I was very surprised to get this news. But Shoaib Aktar has been involved in some controversies or other in his career earlier also. It remains to be seen what action the PCB takes after getting the B report.

I give Some clarifications nandrolone is a steroid with similar structure as testosterone(male hormone) with same kind of effects like increasing muscle mass.
There is a controversy over the way this steroid is detected as it seems it is present in body also and there are other processes happening inside the body that can create it thus increasing its percentage from threshold definded by ICC.

I have seen a lot of statements on this website that if Asif and Shoaib are found guilty they need to be banned for a year? Why, I ask? You look in football or baseball, the bans are no where as long. Recently a football player(Shaun Merriman of the San Diego Chargers) was found to have used nandrolone(same drug as Asif and Shoaib) in a vitamin he takes and if found guilty will only get a 4 game suspension(1/4 of a season of 16 games) If in baseball a player has been found guilty for a first time, he gets a 15 game suspension(almost 1/10 of a 160 game season).

So again I ask why are we trying to ban our boys for an entire year where other sports have a much much shorter ban.

Lets be fair, If found guilty a 3 month ban is more than enough as they would miss 2 big series

Well I kind of agree with a 3month ban but the problem is the; Warne Ban, which took place not so long ago for taking something of less significance comapred to what the Pak bowlers took. If PCB do give them a 3 month ban it makes Pakistan Cricket look bad in front of rest of the world. Now after all fuss about ball tampering and bringing the game into dispute that plagued Pakistan cricket, I think PCB should do the right thing and ban them for a year. It shows that they are a good organisation who does the right thing and doesnt tolerate no nonsense from any player.

The thing is, the protocol for the ICC is a lot closer to the olympic style than the American professional sports style. American pro sports don't follow the WADA protocol at all. I don't think cricket has as strict a policy as olympics but its closer to that than American sports.

Also, the precedent was set with Warne.

Like most have said, not the end of the world, Pakistan have been playing theis ban game far too often. Shabbir Ahmed is set to come back after his ban in December and tested in Australia.

Pakistan are in disarray, not doubt about that. Our new bowling leader has emerged to be Umar gul, who I think in future will become Asif's partner, they can be a really dangerous combination.

Also, we always want him out, but some way or the other he comes back. I am 75% sure that Sami will come back, just because of his pace. Even if he gets hit around all day.

Shabbir, Umar Gul, Rao, Rana Naveed, razzaq, Sami, Najaf Shah, and the young dude who went to England but never played a test should be the resource pool.

Pakistan will struggle up first, expect that people, but if they have any fight left in them, they will stand back up, ideally right before WC07.

Asif is an immense loss, it cannot be measured how huge of a loss he is, even if it is for a year. he is the most different bowler to any in sub-continental history.

Shoaib, shame on him for doing what he did, but I expect him to make a come back, and if he keeps his health up, he will still be bowling fast enough.

Intentionally or unintentionally but the banned thing is running through their body, it would be unfair for those who play against them now as they will be playing against couple of guys who have incresed their chances by unfair means, so i guess they will be held back for sometime atleast for that !!

Regarding taking the drug just before the tourney, i doubt that it happened just before the tourney started, i think it was done well before and during the pommy series.
