I can now see why Fletcher and Co insisted on playing Giles - as was patently obvious - it wasnt his bowling skills.
He was played as a specialist batsman - which is why Monty lost out.
England need to wake up and forget the Ashes last year - what worked then will not work now - they have a fantastic spinner amongst their ranks and there is no need to experiment with mediocrity ( as if Anderson wasnt enough) - they bring in Giles for Monty!
A bowler scores runs by preventing the opposition batsmen getting theirs by bowling them out.
Giles will have to score two hundred every time to be worth his place as a bowler. But if he did that he would be there in place of one of the batsmen!
Whichever way it is looked at he should not be preventing Monty's presence in the side.
I'm pretty sure that either Anderson or Harmy will be dropped at the Adelaide Oval, and Monty and Giles will both play. If they dropped Harmy it will totally destroy his confidence (as if it hadn't been heavily dented by both his treatment by the OZ bats and with Flintoff obviously not trusting him with the new ball). Nothing I've seen of Anderson shows me why he'd even get a spot in the NSW team. He bowled with a total lack of spirit yesterday.
As for Giles, interesting that while the Pom commies were whinging about all the cracks in the pitch making it unplayable when they were struggling to get to 150, Cricinfo had this to say about him:
