A result that will have assured India that England would not be acting overwhelmingly predominant on home, West Indies actually managed to pull off one from under England's feet.
India may be coming out of cold Ireland. But their form certainly is not, considering they managed to rout South African hopes. However, England have had it all too easy in the home series against West Indies. Only briefly tested in the Tests, England looked set to make the most of the one day series as well before the series against India.
But this was when the least expected resistance came. The West Indies Cricket Board have come under considerable flak from Michael Holding who felt the board did little to continue the stream of aspiring cricketers. They may well still think Holding is in the wrong and rub it so after this victory. With wickets in hand, West Indies timed their innings to, well, near perfection.
With help from seniors such as Chris Gayle and former captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul who ended up on a worthwhile century, West Indies set England a daunting challenge they appeared unprepared for. The result thereafter was never in doubt as England lost wickets significantly so. Matthew Prior's half century may have only delayed the inevitable. But this may be the first signs of England cracking under pressure. After all their World Cup was nothing to write home about. Any inflated sense of ego that the series against the West Indies may have given will slowly be restoring to a more realistic shape.
Just goes to show England still have a stumbling block when the opposition actually wakes up to the challenge. India may have found a few similar things about themselves in recent months in the warm up to the series against England. Who will rise to the challenge?
But wait a bit. One more to go against the West Indies. This is not a done and dusted series yet! |
