In the 1970's cricket became stale and boring to watch. Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket breathed new life into a struggling game and took it back to th people.
Cricket in the 2000's has become really boring, the dominance of Australia at international level has made cricket a pointless exercise. I really do believe in its current form cricket is not going to survive.
Enter the IPL - This competition has three major reasons why it will succeed in making cricket interesting again.
1. The game has been shortened to 20 overs to make it easier to market, package and watch. The whole game is finished in under three hours and distilled to the most entertaning past of the game - free scoring, big hitting cricket.
2. A whole new set of franchises based on Indian cities (so there will be local support). But being new and financially rather than geographically specific means that any franchaise can get any player from around the world - this means the splitting up of the all conquering Australian team and the prospet of seeing those great players playing against each other.
3. Money. The Indian Premier League is backed by alot of cash. It is a symbol of India's new power in the world that they can be the one to shake up this old colonial game and make it into the high profile well marketed game that it needs to be

I disagree with virtually every thing you say.
How can you say that cricket in the 70's was boring and stale? Look what happened between Australia and England. England and the West Indies. Australia had Lillee, Thompson, the Chappells etc. We thrashed the Windies, which unleashed them into an unbeatable force. That series saw the emergence of a young Viv Richards who took on the quicks and succeeded spectacularly. Pakistan had a good side and in fact won their first test in Australia. NZ were dour and difficult to beat at home as always.
India were due to tour Australia the year World Series Cricket was born. A SECOND STRING (at it's absolute best) team defeated India 3-2 who were led by the great Bishan Bedi.
No doubt that Packer shook up the game but really,..."he took it back to the people?". The people who he introduced to cricket had never been really involved in the first place. Interested, yes. Not great fans of the longer versions.
You then say that the "2000's", due to Australia's dominance has become pointless, boring etc.
Australia were beaten by England in one of the greatest Series ever seen. *********** Quite strange don't you think, how that Australia was on the wrong end of numerous crucial umpiring decisions but AT NO STAGE THREATENED TO TAKE OUR BAT AND BALL AND GO HOME.
Australia, in the last 3 World Cups, has smashed the Asian power bloc. They have had their chance. This attitude is so typical of the new "emerging India". The rules have already been changed to suit the Asian bloc. Read Murali. Now, due to Australia's dominance we must change the game whereby nasty, brutish, uncouth Australian cricketers will not be able to make your overpaid, unprofessional, pampered ladyboys look exactly that. Once again, the game changes.
20/20 cricket suits India. Flat pitches, small grounds, no body attack from the quicks,no desperation in the field required. It is cricket for the weak. At no stage will the batsmen be in serious danger. Life is one grand bollywood musical.
As for the entry of the IPL;
I agree with your first point. As for "...splitting up the great Australian team... " that really shows your true colours. If you had your way there would be no test cricket. Too hard for you, particularly after SA smashed your lot. The Australian team is changing all the time lately. You wish to CRUSH AUSTRALIA don't you. Your behaviour was atrocious last time, your history is filled with instances of poor standards and you don't like the fact that deep down you know you can never match us long term.
Australia and India can both survive without each other. I say let's split world cricket. I abhor your hypocrisy and double standards.
******** Once the novelty of 20/20 wears off, let's see what happens. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A PLACE FOR THIS GAME.
"Money, new power, powerhouse... ". So many terms for one country. So IPL will shake up an 'old colonial game'. Amusing don't you think? The prejudice is just below the surface. Three of the most played team sports in the world are 'colonial sports'. Can you name them?
I once read where American baseball coaches were looking at India. Particularly pitchers. Can you imagine it??? Having played the game and seen it live in the USA the Americans laugh at your pathetic sporting history and abilities. Baseball is a game played by men with the build of rugby players. Watching Indian players in Australia throw a ball reminds me of someone swinging a handbag.
If 20/20 can convert people to 50 0vers and Tests all the better.
The problem I forsee in the future is; WHAT HAPPENS WHEN INDIA CANNOT WIN AT THIS FORM OF THE GAME.
LET'S CHANGE THE RULES, OR 10/10, MAYBE EVEN 5/5/5/5.
I forgot to add one thing;
MONEY is the symbol of the "new India".
I can't wait to see India spit the dummy, change the rules, threaten to go home or suspend competition, burn other countries flags, racially abuse other countries players to name a few.
India is extremely lucky the ICC is not FIFA or Formula One. If that was the case India would have been banned.
Let's show the world what India really is on the world stage. All it takes is one umpiring decision to go against these savages and the crowds will riot, effigies and flags burnt in the streets and all sorts of posturing and preening on web sites across the world.
SHOW THE WORLD WHAT YOU REALLY ARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY DO YOU THINK INDIA HAS NEVER BEEN AWARDED THE OLYMPIC GAMES???????????????? UNTIL NOW, NOT EVEN THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (wait till 2010).
Change a game for the better??? Change the game for the weaker - that would be you protein deficient Indians.
Who knows, in 10 years we see at least 6 teams from India on the international stage. India is not really one nation is it?
THAT WOULD MAKE ME LAUGH - A NEW PARTITION OF INDIA RESULTING FROM 20/20.
I take it the angry replies to my post are from Australians.
Indians don't want to crush Australians. Yes they want to beat them on the cricket field as Australia wants to beat everyone they play on the cricket field.
For too long though Australians have thought of themselves as the power brokers off the cricket field. This can;t and shouldn't be the case as there are more cricket fans and followers elsewhere.
You have missed the whole point of the Indian Premier League - It's not Australia against India - it's not and inter country competition. What the IPL is - is a club competition. It means we get to see Kumble bowling to Tendulkar and Brett Lee bowling to Ponting (it also means seeing Murali bowl to Sangakara).
If you don't like the idea of the IPL my suggestion is don't wach it - but please don't make stupid claims like India will change the rules so they can win - All the teams in the IPL are Indian and India the national team is not playing.

A typical Indian "cricket fan". You have not even the courage to reply to my proving your previous post (the first) was a load of waffle - vague platitudes that had no substance whatsoever. In fact, they were outright lies used to support your pathetic and flawed theory. So Australia views itself as "... power prokers off the cricket field...?". Why shouldn't we? We have the most successful history of all nations; along with England, the best infrastructure, the most umpires on the elite panel and the best domestic competition in the world. In this country, everyone can, if they choose to, play cricket. There is a level playing field in this country. Your comment of "... more cricket fans elsewhere..." is an interesting one. I presume you mean the Asian bloc of nations? Would they be the same "FANS" WHO RIOT WHEN THE HOME SIDE IS LOSING, BURN EFFIGIES AND FLAGS WHEN THEY ARE LOSING, THREATEN TO GO HOME WHEN THEY DON'T GET THEIR WAY? I could fill a couple of pages with the traits of your so called "fans". INTERESTING HOW EVERY CRICKET GROUND IN THE ASIAN BLOC HAS A 2M FENCE AROUND IT!!!!!!!!! I PRESUME TO KEEP THE ANIMALS OUT RATHER THAN THE PLAYERS IN??????????????????????????????? Is IPL a "club competition?" I would have thought it is similiar to first class cricket in Pakistan. I am sure the franchises will move around from city to city. Just like in the USA. Your comments regarding how this form of cricket will rid us of the evil nationalism that "BLIGHTS" cricket are, once again, indicative of the average Indian cricket fan. YOU HAVE NO TRADITION OF SUCCESS IN WORLD SPORT - YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, TO BUILD A DYNASTY.
What a laughable notion - let's rid the world of evil nationalism that exists in the world by doing away with sport!!!!!! THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT INDIA DOESN'T LIKE/PLAY BODY CONTACT SPORTS.
At least we could respect you if you did. AHHH, life is one happy bollywood musical.
As for making stupid claims about India changing the rules, well, why don't you look at history?? The amount of bouncers allowed would be zero if India had their way. As it is, it was reduced because the Asian bloc had the numbers (that includes Zimbabwe). Let's not talk about Zimbabwe shall we?? I wont mention a functioning democracy like Ireland either. Gee, colour is never an issue with India is it? Look back at the last series in Australia and compare that to the last Ashes series in England. India bullied the ICC into changing it's rules regarding umpires and match referees.
India can try as much as they like. Once the novelty wears off REAL CRICKETERS will want a contest that 20/20 cannot give. Life is one juicy half volley in Indian cricket. In Australia it's a fast bowler trying to knock your head off with the slips packed and plenty of questions regarding your courage and parents. That's all a bit too tough, rough and uncouth for you bollywood ladyboys isn't it???????????????
Typical Australian cricket fan who only views winning as important.
That's why Australians are so gung ho to go to the olympics - we can win more gold than anyone else F*** human rights abuses.
Nationalism is a product of a government in Australia that tried getting Aussie pride to and sporting achievements to gloss over everything else. I believe those riots were in Cronulla - let me guess - you grew here.
idiot - no make that arrogant idiot (and if you didn't pick up on it - I'm from Australia ya dickhead)
Who is the dickhead????? I see you did not reply to any of my points regarding your broad generalisations regarding your first post which was a series of outright lies. So if winning is not important, why bother keeping score in any sport at all??? I don't think we are the only nation that goes hard at the Olympics. When you talk about human rights abuses what are talking about? China and Tibet? Typical, I thought you were a politically correct wanker. Where do your clothes come from? I could say virtually everything couldn't I? But oh no, let's use sport but not trade, that might impinge on your daily comfort levels. What do really know about the Cronulla riots?? Do know the level of hatred and fear that exists towards the Lebanese community in Sydney? Do you know that women were and still are harassed at the beach by these people. Lifeguards beaten up protecting women from these thugs. The rapes that occured using race as an excuse. Most people are sick and tired of this sort of crap. These wankers wanted a "Muslim only" beach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But that's ok isn't it??? A politically correct wanker like you would justify that saying it's their culture to view women as chattels. I suppose you agree with honor killings as well?? What a di.kless wonder you are. You say ..."I'm from Australia..." Are you Australian? I don't think so. You mention Howard. You are a Howard hater, yes? I can imagine how you wring your hands, moaning how the world must hate us, we are so evil, so rascist, blah blah blah. Why don't you live in Zimbabwe, Myanmar (that's Burma you plebian) or Saudi Arabia?? See how bad life can be then.
I was debating cricket issues originally but you have turned this into a game of insults. That's fine, bring it on.
One more thing, you were never a good cricketer were you?? I'm sure you did a lot of fielding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man you are such a loser it frightens me. You start off by going "typical Indian cricket fan" then go on about how I got personal. Your defending of the Cronulla riots shows me and everyone else on this forum you are a racist. No doubt you will be gloating about how many gold medals we win at the games and have no problems with human rights abuses in Tibet. Typical racist - brings up Zimbabwe cause there are white folk there (but you don't know about the millions of people who have died in places like Rwanda, The Congo, Sierra Leone).
John Howard was a backward thinking moron stuck in a 1950's mindset - so happy to see you come to his defence. Your little insular world is crashing arond you.
FACTS.
Let's talk about FACTUAL INFORMATION.
"In the 1970's cricket became stale and boring... "
" ... in the 2000's (it)has become really boring...".
I argued against this flawed theory with FACTS. You did not reply. What a load of sh#t!!! I watched and attended cricket in the 70's. Did you? You cannot back up your vague platitudes with FACTS because you know jacksh#it about the history of cricket. We can't let the FACTS get in the way of a good story can we? Packer took on the establishment because of their refusal to give him tv rights. Cricket was as big in the 70's due to Australia, West Indies, England and Pakistan.
As for Cronulla I would presume you regard women as easy targets? No right to go to the beach and swim and sunbake? No right to be treated with respect? I know your type; you hide in a car or the bushes with a pair of binoculars and jerk off. I presume you believe in female genital mutilation, arranged marriages and honour killings. We will not mention the rapes that occured or the pregnant female bashed with her husband the same day by Lebanese thugs. FACTS. BUT THAT'S OK.
I mentioned Zimbabwe for cricket issues. LOOK AT THE FACTS. As for the millions who died in those shitholes, well, that's typical of Africa. FACTS - look at Uganda, Kenya, the Asians are targeted by the mobs. South Africa will be next. Once the whites are gone it will be the Asians next.
FACTS
I did not say I was a Howard supporter, show me where I did. FACTS
As for my world coming crashing down, what a laugh. You're the loser here boofhead. You lost your country. Why? Democracy didn't function? Big Man politics? Shortage of food? Poor poor pitiful you. You come here and bag our system yet your country is where on the grand scale of things?
As for Tibet, did I say I supported the annexation of Tibet? There is a term called realpolitick. Do you know what it means? You are type of coward who would support and most likely participate in the attack on the woman in the wheelchair carrying the Olympic torch.
"... an old colonial game...". What a politically correct wanker you are! Name the 3 most played team sports in the world. Guess where they come from! What is the language used in the business world? Where are all the sustainable democracies in the world?(who was the colonising power?) Take away India and what colour are the people?FACTS.
FACTS, FACTS, FACTS. SHOW ME THE FACTUAL INFORMATION.
You cannot. You pontificate about things you know nothing about and scream racist at the earliest opportunity because you think it will scare, intimidate or shut people up who don't agree with your politically correct agenda. Next it will be social engineering.
We cannot let the facts get in the way of a good story can we? Paticularly one coming from you. I'm sorry for the fact you were most likely beaten up at school regularly. No good at sport either, always the last one picked if at all. Who is the loser?
Evil nationalism - not bad for someone who in truth doesn't even have a country.
I doubt anyone will wade through the rants above to read this.
A reason why the IPL will be good for cricket was shown when Mike Hussey made his 116 no. No, it wasn't his innings but the way he encouraged and helped his batting partners Raina and Badrinath. Fantastic to watch and I'm sure they will benefit from the experience.
Cricket isn't war - it's a game. A game played by many very talented cricketers from all around the world and the sooner we can all appreciate their skill and determination, the better.
If the IPL helps us to focus on the game, not just the personailities, the administrators, the (infrequent) regrettable incidents, the umpiring, the quality of pitches etc etc, then the IPl will have done the game a great service!
The thing that amuses me is that you all assume in your arrogance that this is the first time that players from different countries have played together in the same sides. Look at English county cricket where it has been happening longer than you care to think. The ads on Australian tv proclaim that finally players like Ponting and Hayden will get to face Warne and Lee etc. These players came through a system called Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup. The toughest cricket in the world.
If the international context is taken out of cricket the majority of Australians will no longer follow it. Now wouldn't that be good for the game!! The most successful nation with the best infrastructure and the best athletes aided by the some of the best sport science/medicine (think Murali there).
I have said repeatedly that anything that introduces cricket to the people who have never before taken an interest is a good thing. What happens when the initial hysteria subsides? How are young bowlers supposed to be encouraged and nurtered if this, as many of you hope becomes the primary game in the cricket world?
I have read many times the comments that it is wonderful to see the foreign players advising and helping the younger Indian players. Don't the elite Indian players interact with their younger compatriots? Or are they too busy with promotions, socialising with Bollywood stars etc?
