The names of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have been thrown in in fair measure for replacing Rahul Dravid, the befallen skipper of the World Cup saga that has become Indian cricket. However, after much hallaballo, the BCCI in league with ex-captains from yesteryears has decided to repose faith in Rahul Dravid to continue in his role.
There is a fair argument that no one besides Dravid seems to appropriately fit the bill and appointing one amongst the seniors would only amount to regressive tactics. Amongst the new crop, there is a fair debate about their performance. So, thrusting any of them with the onerous task of captaincy is clearly not a viable proposition at the moment.
Greg Chappell though seemed to throw in the towel a day before the scheduled face off in the presence of the BCCI. But in an ironical scenario, the board, which has on previous occasions chosen to side the players rather than the coach, persuaded the Australian from prematurely leaving Indian shores. Now it appears there may be a role for him at the National Cricket Academy. Whether it will rake up another storm, remains to be seen.
The team though will for the moment go without a coach. Rather than this being any revolutionary technique, it is most probably a tactic on the part of the BCCI to wait for the World Cup to be completed and to pick the coach on offer.
For the moment though Ravi Shastri will handle the reins of the team as manager while Venkatesh Prasad makes a comeback to the Indian team, this time as bowling coach. One man whose resources have been highly undervalued has been Robin Singh. As fielding coach, there is perhaps finally a look in on the region of India's unimpressive fielding record. But whether Robin can mend an old hand or two will be of interest to watch.
For now though, it is back to the World Cup...yes, it's on!
