'rain stopped play' - a pretty familiar term in the world of cricket (and Wimbledon).
'wind stopped play' - nows thats a bit more unusual. Yet it has happened, briefly, during Australia's 1993/4 tour of South Africa, as the vistors took on Orange Free State at Bloemfontein.
Aussy pace bowler merv hughes must have had an extra helping of baked beans for breakfast because just as he accelerated to the crease to bowl, he broke wind..... that's putting it mildly. it was one helluva rip snorting delivery
South African captain hansi Cronje, who was on strike, instantly dissolved into a fit of giggles. Hughes joined in, and within seconds, every player on the pitch was in hysterics. it took a full three minutes for umpires to restore order and for hughes to complete his over.
Hansie had no cause for complaint though, he went on to score a career-best 251
