As West Indies is hoping to win the cricket world cup in 2007 after 28 years, the appointment of Brian Charles Lara as the captain of the West Indian team has come under great scrutiny.
But I strongly feel that the appointment of Brian Lara as the captain of the team is the best option for the host team. It is also extremely important that Brian Charles Lara leads from the front. If the West Indies has to win the world cup then it is essential that Lara contributes with the bat as well as motivate the players to play as a unit for their nation. If they play as a team and work on their weaknesses then they stand a very good chance to gift their country the Cricket World Cup. What is your view? Is Lara the best choice of West Indies? I kinda agree with you. Brian lara will be an outstanding choice but i somehow feel that this can hinder his performance which will be a major setback to the team. The team needs his performance more than his leadership i guess. He is one of the strongest points in the WI team.
I think their problem is that they don't have much choice other than to run with Lara as leader. Sarwan seemed to be being groomed for years but then obviously was in the wrong place at the wrong time and missed out in favour of Chanderpaul, and I think his form is so patchy anyway that captaining an international side mightr be a burden, to say nothing of the questionnable nature of his partying in the Trini Posse Stand after a thorough thrashing not so long ago!!
Well as Champion mentioned above the West Indies really don't have much choice. Other than Lara, Sarwan may be the next "best" choice as many of you all have said already. I would have preferred Ganga to be the captain but he does not have a permenant place on the team as yet and therefore, it is quite difficult to choose a captain that is
"in and out" of the team. I have to admit that Chanders was a horrible choice when appointed a while ago but then again because of the dispute he was chosen as the captain. Sarwan would have been a much better choice than him but as I said there was a lot of controvesy between WIPA and the WICB at that point in time.
