Rarely has it happened that a World Cup has been unclear in starting out with one single favourite. Rarer still has it been that not one but eight teams are vying for the favourites tag. While it represents that cricket could well undergo a change of guard (or should we say crown?), which is not a bad thing actually, it shows that no one time can claim the Cup outright. That also seems worthy of note as it means the World Cup will be hard fought and a close fought one, and not like the previous one where Australia looked good for the taking.
But rarer still has it been in such an open scenario to see just as many smaller nations competing. The numbers in fact are so equal that their unequal balance in strength with some of the powerhouses has opened up an endless debate. Perhaps that is an issue to take up at a time when it becomes clear as to who are the real contenders and who are the pretenders, but for the moment, it's time to revel that there is an exciting World Cup prospect in store and the game is open to the worldwide fans.
Indians will need to shout themselves hoarse to be heard in the din of the World Cup 2007!!!
