This was highly unexpected! In the midst of a drab summer weekend in England, West Indies forced the England fans to wake up after a lulling period through the Tests!
Paul Collingwood would not have enjoyed his role as the captain of the England team and losing to West Indies, a team that has greatly underachieved and stagnated for much of the summer in England. What should have been a clean sweep for the confident England team turned to be a tale of heroism for the spirited team from the Caribbean islands.
Albeit West Indies woke up to their task a little late. But something must be said for finishing on a high. Certainly the way the last two of the three one day internationals of the NatWest Trophy panned out, England were outsmarted by a seemingly determined team. Where Shivnarine Chanderpaul stood guardian of all things that spoke West Indian cricket, Chris Gayle was at his best in the final one day. In the absence of Brian Lara, many expectations lay on the younger squad and while the seniors rising to the challenge was encouraging but not surprising, it must hearten West Indian fans somewhat to see Runako Morton showing more mettle than he has been given credit for.
It may still be a drop in the ocean and West Indies have a long way to go but nothing like a piece of silverware added to egg them on! Sweet things are made of these!
England though have a bit more soul searching to do before the anticipating Indians are upon them!
