IMO the new IPL cricket is great for cricket overall. Personally, although I watch it,I am generally not a huge 20 20 fan, but I will definately turn in to watch this. The best players around the world playing against each other, should be great. It is also good for cricket, that so much money is being poured into it, meaning more people watch it, and more people follow cricket overall.
The only dissappointing thing for me is the perceived greed by some of the players. Ponting was complaining about only getting $450,000, which I thought lacked class. So many people around the world live on the poverty line and you have a guy complaining he is only getting $450,000 for maybe 20-30 days of 2 hours work.
The players salaries surprised me a bit. I thought some players were over rated and some under rated.
But anyway looking forward to watch it. Hopefully it is televised in oz.
I think the IPL should be good for Indian cricket, having the youger Indian players getting experiance at a world class level can only help them develop their games.
As far as the rest of the world, and the top level Indian players go though, it will be good for their bank balance but not much else (putting the entertainment factor for the fans aside of course).
Only the top international players are going to be brought in and I can't see they will gain much from the experiance that they don't already get in regular international cricket.
I wouldn't comment whether IPL is good or bad for Indian cricket, because I feel it is good for the BCCI [big money] ICC gets a share so its a money churning Idea this IPL.
The franchisees decide who they Play so, we need to wait and watch for it.

I think any form of cricket that brings in people who would not normally be interested is good for the game.
This form of cricket is more likely to succeed in countries like China and USA.
I think certain countries will be seriously affected. Australia, India and England are strong. I fear for the others. The beauty of world cricket is its diversity. Having played in the Caribbean I can safely say that cricket there is almost dead. With satellite dishes, American sport and the influence of American culture (soccer as well), the young quite often view cricket as boring and a game from another era. Maybe 20/20 will bring the young back.
People were certain cricket would die when Kerry Packer came on the scene. It didn't. Let's hope that there is a place for all 3 forms of the game.
On the subject of whether the IPL will be good for the game I think only time will tell. It seems a very commercially driven venture and I wonder if there will e any re-investment into youth programs in India and around the cricketing world.
Let's hope cricket not just survives but becomes richer for the experience. As an Australian th chance of seeing Ponting, Hayden and Gilchrist facing up to Warne, Lee and McGrath is reason enough to watch
There is no doubt that the average Indian cricket fan will embrace 20/20. What will happen when they are consistently beaten and cannot win the future world cup for this form of the game? Perhaps 5/5? The rules are always changed for the sub continent nations - remember the degrees of the arm? No more banter on the field? Perhaps the cricket world should split. England, Australia, N.Z, Ireland and The Netherlands on one side and every one else on the other. At least the countries mentioned would not have to put up with Zimbabwe any more!!!!!!!!!!!!
This form of the game will not encourage bowlers - who will want to see batsmen taking the ball on the body, playing and missing and having TO FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL? That would suit the average Indian player I think!!! 20/20 is for the weak players who cannot concentrate for more than 1 hour. This includes fielding.
Baseball is like 20/20. Having played both at a reasonable standard I think cricket is in danger of losing it's soul. I am prepared to watch 20/20. I hope that it brings people to the game and encourages them to play the longer forms of the game. Too be honest, I'm not holding my breath.
Bowlers cannot hope to install fear in batsmen for a period of time in this form of the game. Like I said, this game will suit those countries that have no tradition in world sport. Watch the death of test cricket in India. At least we have the Ashes. We don't need neutral umpires and sledging will be allowed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
